It Started With a Love for the Ocean

Whale Tales is a small family-owned business built around a big passion for the ocean.

Over the past five years, we’ve grown from a simple idea into a dedicated team of skippers, guides, photographers and marine enthusiasts who share one goal: creating unforgettable whale encounters.

For us, whale watching isn’t simply about seeing a whale.

It’s about feeling the excitement when a humpback surfaces beside the boat. It’s hearing the stories behind their incredible migration. It’s learning something new about the ocean. And it’s having the space to stop, put the camera down and simply take it all in.

Rob

Whale Tales mastermind and Manager of Operations

It might be faster to talk about what this guys doesn’t do! The father and inventor of Whale Tales, you will find Captain Rob; skippering, guiding, servicing & maintaining the boats, answering the calls and even sign writing the boats and printing the t-shirts! With 14 years of sailing experience under his belt, he’s the master of making your adventure unforgettable.

Though he might be camera-shy, he’s always there to make sure your experience is absolutely top notch and he won’t rest until you experience the perfect moment with the magnificent humpback whale.

Katie

Our Whale Spirit Mother, and is the Heart and Soul of Our Business

You can’t see her, but she is everywhere. A true mastermind behind your epic whale-watching adventure! From the moment you so much as think about heading out whale watching, Katie is feeling your vibes and working to create the adventure of a lifetime. From crafting unforgettable marketing campaigns to ensuring our passengers and crew are safe and happy – Katie is there in the background.

Her dedication to creating unforgettable experiences is truly inspiring! Let’s give her a virtual round of applause!

Mette

Our Very Own Whale Whisperer

Her mind is a treasure trove of incredible whale stories and knowledge that will amaze you. She’s swum hundreds of times alongside these giants in Tonga and we think she might still be part of their pod! How else do whales know when Mette’s on board?

She’s spent a decade unravelling their world and even speaks fluent whaleish! Mette is incredibly invested in giving you the best experience possible and she does this on each and every trip. We love her and we know you will too!

Sofia

Our Amazing Marine Scientist in the Making

This ball of energy joined our dynamic team this season, and we don’t think we will let her leave – EVER! Sofia is our little eco-warrior, sea gypsy, science nerd with a passion for saving the planet. We need more of these! You will see her bouncing excitedly around the boat like it’s the first time she has ever seen a whale/ seal / dolphin ! Her pure joy & enthusiasm for marine life is simply irresistible.
This little dive instructor, sailing, rock climbing earth ninja needs to be seen in action to be believed. Don’t take our word for it – come and meet Sofia for yourself!

Alex

Better Known as Kelso – Our Amazing Skipper Extraodinaire

This guy joined our team this season and we are the better for it! The descendant of ancient Australian ship builders & seafarers, there is nothing this guy can’t do at the helm! Better still.. he does it all with a fist bump and a massive smile on his dial!!
He is dedication to creating an unforgettable experience for every single person onboard and when it comes to safety – he’s got your back! Sit back and relax and let this guy steer your whale journey in the right direction!

Em

Our Free-Diving Expert with a Lifelong Love of the Ocean

‘I’ve been a water baby my whole life. I did competitive swimming, moved into competitive water polo, and then I found free diving’. Em has worked on whale swim freediving experiences prior to joining the Whale Tales team for the 2026 season. Excellent with kids, Em is a super experienced guide and an asset to every one of our experiences out on the water.

Ben

Captain Good Vibes

What a legend this guys is!! Ben is, in his own words, ‘a mad fan of the ocean’. Like really mad. Ben is a bit of an all-rounder, and we haven’t yet convinced him to let go of his day job – so you will see Ben out there on the weekends. Captain Good Vibes by name and by nature, and very safety conscious, you will want Ben Captaining your experience on the water.
