Whale Mugging Experience: When Curious Humpbacks Approach Whale Watching Boats
It’s another fan favourite and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Every season we get a few lucky trips that get mugged by whales! Don’t worry; it is not the kind of mugging, you know. Mugging occurs when one or more inquisitive whales approach a boat to observe the people onboard. They swim around and underneath the boat, sometimes lifting their heads out of the water to make eye contact. When that happens, the captain is required to turn off the boat’s engine and patiently wait for the whale or whales to depart, which greatly pleases the passengers. Sometimes, we get so lucky that they decide to hang out with us for the entire tour and are quite responsive to the sounds and movements we make. It is very rewarding to see them having fun with us! A fun fact is that they usually approach us when we have kids on board; I guess they get curious about all the high-pitched excited noises!
