Surface Sightseeing: How Whales Get a Glimpse Above Water
This is a very simple and fun behaviour we occasionally see, performed by individual whales with curious personalities.
It is basically when the whale gets into a vertical position and lifts only its face out of the water, sometimes combining it with a little 360-degree spin. The only reason they do that is to have a look at what is happening on the surface. You know, check out the beautiful Sydney coastline and the faces of those watching them from the boat. Some whales like to do people watching as much as people enjoy whale watching!
