Bottlenose Dolphins in Australia: Facts, Threats, and Where to Spot Them
The Bottlenose Dolphin can be found all around Australia’s coastline, and many times, we spot them riding the waves alongside our boats. Although Bottlenose Dolphins are generally still abundant, they encounter various threats. Risks include unintentional capture during fishing activities (bycatch), while concerns about pollution and habitat degradation are also future challenges to their populations.
There are two recognised types of Bottlenose Dolphins: an offshore variety and an inshore one, which might actually be distinct species. Typically, these dolphins are found in social groups known as pods, consisting of anywhere from a few individuals to over a thousand members.
Dolphins have a short, rounded snout shaped like a bottle, explaining their name. They also have a slightly curved and quite large dorsal fin. The dolphin’s colouring features different shades of grey, with lighter grey along the sides and a pale, almost white underside. This is a very common colour pattern for ocean animals called counter-shading.
