Hammerhead sharks are an iconic species that inhabit Australian waters, including the Sydney coast! Unfortunately, all four species of hammerheads we have are under threat. Hammerhead shark numbers in Australian waters are shrinking quickly, with scalloped hammerheads experiencing some of the most severe declines. It’s estimated that their population has dropped by as much as 80% compared to their original numbers. They are easily identified by their hammer-shaped heads, but they vary significantly in size depending on the species, with the largest being the great hammerhead, which can grow up to 6 meters.
